Today from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., visitors can celebrate the recent fossil discoveries made near Snowmass Village with special programs presented by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Highlights include live broadcasts from the dig site; an Ice Age dentist office, where visitors can see, touch and examine the teeth of Ice Age animals; Sloth Races; and the chance to get your hands in the “dirt” and dig around. Museum activities will be held at the Silvertree Conference Center. Live music, photos, videos, and displays will be set up nearby at the Ice Age Discovery Center, located at the Snowmass Mall. or 303-370-6000
Historic preservation volunteers.
HistoriCorps, a program dedicated to preserving and maintaining historic buildings on public land, is looking for volunteers for its summer 2011 projects. Upcoming projects include Granite Peak Guard Station in the San Juan National Forest, June 27-July 1; Little Brooklyn Guard Station, in Centennial, Wyo., from July 1-9; and Harris Ranch, in the San Juan National Forest, July 11-Aug. 12, among several others. Volunteers are provided with space to camp, daily meals and camaraderie around the camp fire at night. All projects utilize students and volunteers as a skills-training opportunity. Run, ride in Pagosa Springs.
The Pagosa Duathlon is July 9 in Pagosa Springs. The full duathlon is a 6-mile run and 12-mile mountain bike ride, while the half duathlon is a 3-mile run, 7-mile ride. Participants can enter either race as a two-member team or solo. For kids, there is a Mini-Du, with a 1-mile run and a 1-mile ride.
Crested Butte Wildflower Festival.
The 25th annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival will take place July 11-17. The festival spans the peak of wildflower season and will offer several opportunities for hikes and walks to view the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” More than 30 photography classes will be offered for all skill levels; sunrise photo workshops and critique sessions have been added this year. Also, yoga classes will be available, as well as several art classes for all skill levels.
