A convicted child molester was arrested after he attacked two officers with scissors at a community corrections facility in Mesa County, officials say.

Paul Savage, 22, was being held Saturday for investigation of two counts of first degree assault and one count of attempted first degree assault, said Kate Porras, Grand Junction police spokeswoman.

Savage allegedly assaulted two workers at the Powell Building, 650 South Avenue, said Jessica Peterson, spokeswoman for Mesa County.

The employees received minor puncture wounds and cuts, Porras said. Neither of the victims were taken to a hospital for their injuries, she said.

A third worker was not injured.

Community Corrections inmates stay at the unlocked Powell Building in lieu of going to prison. They are expected to hold outside jobs and follow rules.

At the time of the attack, Savage was being searched after violating unspecified community corrections rules.

Several employees were searching him before sending him to the Mesa County Jail when they discovered the sewing scissors and placed them on a counter.

Savage allegedly snatched the scissors and attacked the workers, Porras said.

He has prior arrests for sex offenses, assaults and illegal weapon’s charges.

He was charged with several child molestation offenses in 2008 including sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust and pattern of abuse, according to state court records.

He was giving a four-year community sentence last year.

In 2009, he was sentenced to a one-year work release program for a conviction of assault causing injury.
