An Aurora police officer was taken to the hospital Saturday after a vehicle ran a stop sign and slammed into his patrol car.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., the officer was driving south on Dayton Street when a vehicle traveling west on East 12th Avenue ran a stop sign and smashed into the marked car, according the Aurora Police Department.

The vehicle rolled on its side, and the two people inside had to be extricated by firefighters. Both were released at the scene.

The officer had burns to his arms from an airbag deployment and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Both cars were towed from the scene.

The driver, who has not been identified, was cited.

The name of the officer has not been released.
