AURORA — Aurora police are warning residents to secure their homes at night after a man or teen entered a home early today and attempted to sexually assault a little girl.
The incident happened just before 6 a.m. in northwest Aurora. Police would not give a more specific address.
According to police spokesman Bob Friel, the suspect entered through an open window. The parents of a sleeping 4-year-old girl heard noises coming from her bedroom.
When the parents went to check on her, they found the suspect standing over her bed. He ran away after they spotted him.
“They found a stranger in her bedroom standing over her,” Friel said.
The suspect is still at-large. Police describe him as being either Hispanic or white, between 15 to 19 years old and between 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 9 inches tall.
Friel said the suspect may have sexually assaulted the little girl, who was taken to an area hospital. She will undergo more interviews with police on Friday.
“This is a disturbing case,” Friel said, “particularly to parents and guardians of children.”
Even though it’s summer, police are encouraging residents to lock all their windows at night and make sure everything is secure.
“We are asking residents to take extra precautions,” Friel said.
He said police do not believe this case is associated with any other case. “There’s nothing to indicate this is a copycat scenario,” Friel said.
