DENVER—The Colorado Avalanche will open their 2011-12 regular season by hosting the Detroit Red Wings Oct. 8 at the Pepsi Center.
The Avalanche released a new schedule Thursday showing that the team will play a total of 18 home weekend games. Also on the schedule are visits from Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins March 3 and Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals Dec. 17.
The team will play an eight-game homestand Nov. 18 to Dec. 4 and wrap up the season April 7 when they host the Nashville Predators.
Colorado will play a total of six exhibition games. The first preseason home game is Sept. 23 against the St. Louis Blues.
