DURANGO, Colo.—Researchers are taking soil samples to better understand the effect of mercury after five reservoirs and lakes were put under fish consumption advisories in southwest Colorado.

Mountain Studies Institute researcher Joe Ryan says wildfires are believed to release mercury from soil. Mercury is harmful to humans and wildlife.

The McPhee, Totten, Vallecito and Narraguinnep reservoirs and Navajo Lake are under fish-consumption advisories because of unsafe levels of mercury, according to the Durango Herald.
