A $1 million bail has been set for the man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old Denver girl and running from the law.

Bret Lee Luckett Thompson, 27, who was checked into the Denver County Detention Center about 1:15 p.m. Friday, appeared in a Denver courtroom at 10 a.m. Saturday and was charged with felony second-degree kidnapping and felony sexual assault on a child.

Thompson also faces a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, according to the FBI.

“We will see what happens,” his foster mother, Sylvia Luckett, said after his advisement hearing.

“What he allegedly did, we will soon find out with the DNA and everything else.”

“I think it’s better where he’s at. If he ran the first time, he would run again. I just want him to know I still love him and support him,” Luckett said.

Thompson was arrested in North Brunswick, N.J., on June 13 after authorities found him sleeping in his van behind a Walmart store.

Thompson is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a girl in Denver on June 2.

Police say Thompson allegedly took the little girl from the 400 block of South Raleigh Street near South Stuart Street, sexually assaulted her, and then dropped her off in the 1900 block of Federal Boulevard about an hour and a half later.

The FBI launched a nationwide manhunt for Thompson, who is also known as “Wyatt.”

9News requested an interview with Thompson on Friday and he agreed to speak with us. When we arrived for the interview he said he would only answer questions on the condition we pay money to his adoptive mother and the victim in this case. 9News has a policy against paying for interviews.

Thompson said if that changes, 9News could get back to him because, “I’m not going anywhere for a long time.”
