Lakewood Police have identified the man who was killed Saturday morning after he drove the wrong direction on West Sixth Avenue and crashed into a Jeep Liberty.

Harold Kirkpatrick, 85, of Westminster crashed into the Jeep between Garrison and Kipling streets at around 10 a.m., about a quarter of a mile after he began to drive westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic, police said.

The Jeep then collided with a third vehicle, causing minor injuries.

Kirpatrick and the woman driving the Jeep were both taken to St. Anthony Hospital, where the woman was treated with minor injuries and Kirkpatrick died several hours later.

Lakewood Police spokesman Ty Countryman said investigators are still talking with Kirkpatrick’s family to determine his ability to drive and why he was traveling the wrong direction on Sixth Avenue.

Countryman said investigators could only speculate at this point as to whether age was a factor in the incident.
