DENVER—Colorado’s chief justice has issued a directive requiring free interpreters for all court proceedings.

The directive is part of an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday to resolve complaints that Colorado courts were not complying with federal laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or religion.

As part of the agreement, the Colorado Judicial Department promised to develop state and local language access plans addressing both oral interpretation and the translation of vital written documents.

Colorado Judicial Department spokesman Rob McCallum says the department is glad to be in compliance and will provided needed language services.
