Gale force winds hit Burlington at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, whipping trees, snapping off branches and even splitting a tree vertically, half on the ground and half still standing.

The outburst of wind was followed by an electrical outage.

“We are considering last night’s storm to be a micro burst,” said Jesse Lundquist of the National Weather Service at Goodland, Kan. A high gust of 84 mph was measured at the Burlington-Kit Carson County airport located 3 miles south of Burlington on U.S. Highway 385.

“Last night’s event is a classic microburst (down-burst) event,” said David Floyd meteorologist at Goodland. “Rumors of a tornado are completely false.”
