DENVER—The Fourth of July holiday weekend brings another crackdown on drunken driving.
The Colorado State Patrol and more than 100 law enforcement agencies are hitting the roads with stepped-up DUI patrols and sobriety checkpoints. The enforcement began Thursday night and runs through 3 a.m. Tuesday.
The enforcement is part of the summer-long “100 Days of Heat” campaign that started Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day.
The State Patrol says half of the 10 traffic fatalities during last year’s Fourth of July crackdown in Colorado involved alcohol. The patrol says 620 drivers were arrested for DUI.
Law enforcement officers have also been patrolling Colorado lakes to catch boaters driving under the influence.
