The man who had been caring for an 11-month-old Windsor girl who died Wednesday after an accident in a home child-care facility was found dead Friday near the Pawnee Buttes Grasslands, the result of an apparent suicide.
Garrett Moore, 35, of Windsor died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to Weld County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Margie Martinez.
“This is a tragic story that just keeps getting worse,” said Windsor Police Chief John Michaels.
Moore was caring for Kalea Mummery and 12 other children Monday under the child-care license of his mother, Janette Moore. He told police Kalea had become fussy, so he laid her down in a playpen to nap while he made lunch for the other children.
When he checked on her about 35 minutes later, she was not breathing. Her head had wedged between a mattress and the netted side of the crib. It appears the weight of her body, which remained on the mattress, cut off her air. Her family removed her from life support Wednesday.
