NEW YORK — Tests on Jose Reyes‘ tight left hamstring revealed a Grade 1 strain, the mildest kind, and the all-star shortstop might be able to return to the New York Mets’ lineup in a few days.
“Just a little bit of a strain. I mean, nothing big,” Reyes said Sunday. “I know we’re going to take it one day at a time and see what happens, but it’s real good news.”
Reyes was set to travel with the Mets to the West Coast, where they wrap up the first half of the season with four games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and three in San Francisco this week.
Mets manager Terry Collins said he hopes Reyes might be ready to play Tuesday, though it’s possible he could end up sitting out all week before the all-star break.
“We have to take it one day at a time,” general manager Sandy Alderson said. “We’re not making any predictions at the moment.”
• The Dodgers activated shortstop Rafael Furcal from the disabled list and placed third baseman Casey Blake on the 15-day DL for the third time this season because of a strained neck.
• Despite an 8-4 record, Ivan Nova was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the New York Yankees to open a roster spot for Phil Hughes, who is just about ready to come off the DL.
• Indians starter Fausto Carmona went on the 15-day DL after he strained his right thigh in a mishap while running the bases Saturday.
• Second baseman Orlando Hudson was feeling better, but he was out of the San Diego Padres’ lineup again with a sore left knee that he fouled a pitch off Friday.
• The Pittsburgh Pirates sent right-handed pitcher Brad Lincoln to Triple-A Indianapolis.
NBC out of Wimbledon mix
NEW YORK — Wimbledon is leaving NBC after 43 years and appears headed to ESPN.
NBC said in a statement that “while we would have liked to have continued our relationship, we were simply outbid.”
A person with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed that ESPN was working on a contract with the All England Club to televise all of the Grand Slam tournament. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not ready to be announced.
Haye is feeling the heat
HAMBURG, Germany — British boxer David Haye found little sympathy after blaming a broken toe for his points loss to Wladimir Klitschko in a heavyweight unification fight.
Even in Britain, boxing experts said Haye should have withdrawn from the fight or kept quiet about the injury he said he suffered during training three weeks before Saturday’s bout.
