A semi-trailer crash closed and clogged eastbound Interstate 70 in the mountains for much of Monday afternoon, causing major delays for travelers heading home from the long holiday weekend.

The crash happened near mile marker 256 in Mount Vernon Canyon and spilled fruit across the roadway.

Only one person reported minor injuries.

It is unclear what caused the crash, which occurred about 12:40 p.m.

The semi-trailer landed on its side, blocking two lanes. It was carrying peaches and apples, which spilled onto the interstate.

Cleanup was delayed because in addition to removing the trailer, workers had to clear the area of fruit, according to Trooper Nate Reid, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman.
