State Senate President Brandon Shaffer will keep his seat in the General Assembly next session while challenging U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner for Congress in 2012.
Shaffer, a Democrat from Longmont, said he would follow his Republican opponent’s example and remain in power while running.
The legislator made his long-anticipated announcement before guests at his home on Independence Day.
By remaining in office, Shaffer keeps the higher profile but loses some fundraising opportunities. Lobbyists are barred from donating to lawmakers’ campaigns during the legislative session.
Shaffer said his campaign would focus on a bipartisan approach to bolstering the economy and trimming the national debt.
