Colorado Senate President Brandon Shaffer announced Monday night via YouTube that he will run for the 4th Congressional District in 2012.

The video shows Shaffer addressing a group of friends and family during a backyard party on the Fourth of July.

“Tomorrow (Tuesday), I am going to announce that I am an official candidate for Congress,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer, D-Longmont, had considered running in 2008 but stepped aside for the candidacy of Betsy Markey, who defeated incumbent Republican Marilyn Musgrave. After current U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, a Republican, defeated Markey in her bid for re-election, Shaffer’s name was discussed as a possible challenger.

The 4th CD has been at the center of a re-districting battle by the Legislature, with the exact lines to be considered by a judge this fall.
