A Fort Collins woman was physically assaulted before she jumped from a second-story window during a fire this morning, police said, and she is now in critical condition.
At 5:33 a.m., firefighters received a call about an apartment fire at 1201 Pomona St., according to a news release from the Fort Collins Police Department and the Poudre Fire Authority.
The caller reported smoke coming from an upstairs window on the south side of the apartment.
Officials arrived and found a 30-year-old woman in the backyard.
The woman was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies where she was listed in critical condition. Officers have not spoken to the woman because of the severity of her injuries.
The woman was injured during the fire and her jump from the window. Doctors confirmed the woman was physically assaulted but police would not release details about her injuries.
Firefighters did not find anyone else in the apartment and there does not appear to be any forced entry into the residence.
Police confirmed the woman was assaulted inside the home but did not release any information about a possible suspect.
The woman had recently moved to Fort Collins from Longmont and was living alone in the apartment.
Police are working to re-trace the woman’s whereabouts on Monday and are interviewing her family and friends.
Authorities released the woman’s name but The Denver Post is withholding it because she is the victim of a violent crime and the perpetrator is still at large.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Jaclyn Shaklee at 970-221-6575 or Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868.
