With an event lineup that included an art festival, trail run, concert and even a fire dancing show, it seemed Breckenridge was holding nothing back this year for one of the biggest weekends of the summer season. But high expectations fizzled on what should have been the highlight of the Fourth of July: the fireworks display.

The show, moved from the north gondola parking lot to the roof of the town welcome center in the downtown core this year, failed to impress many spectators who have come to expect nothing less than extraordinary from the town’s $13,000 pyrotechnical display of patriotism.

Moving the fireworks into town meant onlookers were closer to the action, but so were the flammable foliage and historic buildings of downtown, forcing Breckenridge to switch from traditional fireworks to more-expensive American-made “proximate” fireworks, which do not pose a fire danger.

The quieter proximate fireworks are so named because they are meant to be enjoyed at close range and may not be as fantastic from a distance, said local private subcontractor Robin Theobald, who has helped arrange the Breckenridge show for years.
