BOSTON — James Bulger pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he played a role in 19 murders and other crimes, most of which took place while he was an informant for the FBI.

Bulger, 81, who is known as Whitey, entered his plea quietly as his two brothers and relatives of his alleged victims looked on at the federal courthouse here. Prosecutors told Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler of U.S. District Court that they anticipated a four-week trial, but Bulger’s court-appointed lawyer, J.W. Carney Jr., said it would probably be much longer.
