PUEBLO, Colo.—The Colorado Forest Service says the number of large wildfires in Colorado this year has been exceptional for this early in the year.

Spokesman Ryan Lockwood says drought and windy conditions have made fires more difficult to fight.

Lockwood tells the Pueblo Chieftain there have been more than 1,000 wildland fires so far this year, which have scorched 15,739 acres of land. Last year there were 1,076 fires that burned more than 40,000 acres for the entire year.
