DENVER—A man accused of stabbing a puppy five times in the face has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said he filed charges Thursday against Matthew Davonn Weatherspoon. The 19-year-old is being held in jail on $2,000 bond and is due in court for an advisement hearing July 6.

Weatherspoon is accused of stabbing a 6-month-old American bulldog five times in its head and face and then putting it outside. A passerby found the dog and called police.

Weatherspoon told KUSA-TV the dog attacked him and cornered him in his apartment. He says he had no choice but to defend himself.

A veterinary hospital says the puppy had surgery and is in intensive care.
