Getting your player ready...

One hundred thirty locals will go over the edge today and Saturday. They will rappel down the side of the high-rise building at 1600 Glenarm Place to raise money for Cancer League of Colorado.

I’m not the type to rappel down 31 stories with nothing beneath me but the 16th Street Mall — but such fears will not stop the likes of Metromix’s Heidi McGuire, Nuggets mascot Rocky, Murphy Huston from KOSI (wearing a pink tutu), Bailey from KTCL, developer Peter Kudla (in a Superman outfit) and my old pal Steve Toltz from Dependable Cleaners. Last year, Dr. Andrew Thornburg did it in a kilt.

Many of the rappellers are going down for the second year — which makes them officially nutso.

“This is very professionally done,” says Toltz. “The people who put this on have a lot of experience. They do it all over the country. And most of the time when you rappel, you have to climb up something. Here, you just take the elevator up and rappel down.”

But isn’t it scary?

“When you first put your feet on the side of the building and sit back and look down, yes, it’s scary,” he says. “But once you start, it’s a blast.”

It sounds too much like skydiving for me.

“I would never skydive,” Toltz says. “The best part of rappelling is that if something goes wrong, I won’t know anything about it.”

In Bloom.
