Former Larimer County Republican Party chairman Larry Carillo, accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the party, surrendered to Glendale police Thursday night.

Carillo, 32, of Fort Collins, arrived at the police station about 9:30 p.m. and left later that night on $10,000 bond. He does not have any court dates set yet.

Fort Collins police issued a warrant for Carillo’s arrest Tuesday. A 17-page affidavit accuses him of taking $17,696.34 from the party and using it to cover his cable and phone bills as well as gambling debts.

Carillo served as the local GOP chairman between February 2009 and March 2011. The affidavit says three party representatives reported the theft to police on March 10 after they learned Carillo hadn’t filed some required documents with the Colorado secretary of state.

Carillo declined to comment Friday because the investigation is still ongoing.

Fort Collins police said Carillo is cooperating with them. Spokeswoman Rita Davis did not know why Carillo chose to turn himself in in Glendale instead of Fort Collins but said, “You can turn yourself in anywhere.”

Larimer County District Attorney Larry Abrahamson will not prosecute the case because he donated to the county GOP. Instead, the Weld County district attorney will oversee the case.
