Cole Garner hit cleanup at La Quinta High School in Garden Grove, Calif., one notch down from Ian Stewart. “That’s why I didn’t get a lot of RBIs,” Garner said. “He took them all.” Not so Friday night. Garner hit sixth in his first major-league start, one notch up from Stewart, and collected his first big-league hit and RBI.

In pain.

Even in victory, the Rockies suffered a setback. The deep bone bruise in Carlos Gonzalez’s right wrist caused him increased pain as the night wore on, leaving his availability for tonight in doubt. Said CarGo, when asked if he aggravated the injury by diving for a ball in the ninth inning: “I was already in pain, so I can’t tell.”

For the record.

The Rockies are 7 1/2 games out of the NL West lead. They were two games out at the all-star break in 2009, when they won the wild card, and 5 1/2 out in 2007, when they went to the World Series. Jim Armstrong, The Denver Post
