A man accused of killing his ex-wife in a suicide pact in 2008 was sentenced today to life in prison without parole.
Keenu Tiyme, 37, plead not guilty by reason of insanity, but in May a Denver jury determined he was guilty of first-degree murder.
The murder happened on Oct. 18, 2008. Tiyme had rented a Denver motel room with ex-wife Kauri Tiyme, 39, a tattoo artist.
Kauri Tiyme was cut multiple times, drugged, choked, bashed in the head and had her throat slit. Authorities found sleeping pills, a scalpel and rat poison in the room.
Her body was found the next day by a housekeeper.
Kauri Tiyme had operated a tattoo shop called Breckenridge Body Art for several years.
According to friends, she wanted to move to Denver and open a tattoo shop and gallery in the city.
During trial, Keenu Tiyme argued that the pair had considered multiple ways to die before checking into the hotel. He said that he tried to kill himself, too, but ultimately couldn’t.
After the murder, Keenu Tiyme left Colorado.
Several days later he was arrested in New Mexico.
