DENVER—An oversight at the former Colorado Division of Wildlife has left officials with less money to spend.

The division is merging with the state parks department, and the agencies’ combined board hasn’t decided how to respond yet.

The division’s chief financial officer, Susan Hunt, said Friday that the division overlooked $32.4 million in spending when it compiled its financial projections over the years.

The division had been retaining 10 percent of its budget in reserve for emergencies, but Hunt says the division was about $4 million short of the required reserve in fiscal 2008-2009 and almost $16 million short in fiscal 2009-2010.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports the division would fall about $6.6 million short of its required $7.6 million reserve for the current fiscal year if spending proceeds as planned.
