Scientists are discussing the discovery of nearly 5,000 fossils from a site near Snowmass Village and talking about the steps they’re taking to analyze and preserve their findings.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is hosting a tour at the museum Tuesday to explain the significance of the discoveries that came from what officials are calling the largest ever excavation project of fossils.

Scientists say 4,826 bones have been pulled from the site and they include bones from 26 different Ice Age animals. Some are from mastodons, horses, a camel and a ground sloth. Crews worked for more than two months of the project. It began last year when a bulldozer operator uncovered a bone while working on the expansion of the Ziegler Reservoir.
