The fine water mist fire suppression system developed by Littleton-based ADA Technologies Inc. is currently being tested by NASA and is destined for use aboard the International Space Station as soon as year’s end.
But the engineering that went into it could not be more sophisticated.
While the device looks like an ordinary fire extinguisher, it emits microscopic and uniformly sized droplets of water at high velocity.
“Think fog, as compared to rain,” ADA engineering vice president Jim Butz said.
It would replace the carbon dioxide extinguishers now on the space station, systems that would as likely endanger astronauts as they would suppress fire.
