Boulder County will pay $100,000 to buy mining claims that private owners retained when they sold what’s now known as the Kraft Open Space properties to the county for $1,275,000 in 2002.

The county’s latest acquisition, which county commissioners approved Tuesday, will include the mining claims the Kraft family retained underlying about 58 acres in the area, which lies on south-facing mountain slopes along Fourmile Canyon Drive and Nancy Mine Road northwest of the onetime Wall Street townsite, according to Parks and Open Space Department staffer Jim Daus.

The $100,000 purchase also will give the county ownership of two parcels totaling about 4.8 acres — one of which straddles Fourmile Canyon Drive and the other located next to the Neuer property the county recently acquired for open space — which the Krafts also had earlier retained in the event they’d someday resume gold mining in the area.
