Crews are fighting a fire inside the roof of Aspen Academy in Greenwood Village.
The fire started at about 3:20 p.m. during the worst of a passing storm, and staff inside heard a loud crack of thunder overhead before the fire broke out, said Andy Lyon, spokesman for West Metro Fire Rescue.
Lyon said no students were on campus at the time, and the staff of about 20 got out safely.
At 5:40 p.m. flames were burning inside the roof, which has no access from underneath. That has kept crews away from some of the burning areas, Lyon said.
Aspen Academy is a 6-year-old private early childhood education through eighth grade prep school at South University Boulevard and East Orchard Road.
