The Emmy nominations released this morning contain good news for the broadcast networks –cable doesn’t own the comedy list this year– and bad news for a number of talents who were overlooked.

Most egregious omission: NBC’s “Community” missing from the best comedy nominations. It should have taken the slot occupied by “The Office” or “Parks and Recreation.”

Happiest, most overdue inclusion: Ed O’Neill finally got the comedy actor nod after being the most neglected member of the “Modern Family” cast. Thanks goodness Margo Martindale’s standout supporting actress performance on “Justified” was recognized.

And hooray for the the addition of Mirelle Enos of the much derided “The Killing,” on the best drama actress list.

“Friday Night Lights” finally made its way onto the best drama list, after a run on NBC, then DirecTV and repeating on NBC.

Two of last year’s winners, Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer”) and Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), were not nominated, making room for fresh faces. Cranston’s series was ineligible because it took a break between seasons.

Cable’s ascendancy in the awards field continues, notably in the drama category. HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and “Game of Thrones,” Showtime’s “Dexter,” DirecTV/NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” will compete against a sole broadcast network entry, CBS’ “The Good Wife.”

“Mad Men” and “Mildred Pierce” justifiably scored the most noms of the year.

The Emmy Awards will be telecast Sept. 18 on Fox with “Glee’s” Jane Lynch as host.
