FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The U.S. Forest Service is expected to make a decision about Colorado roadless rules later this year.
The Forest Service says it received 55,000 public comments across the state by Thursday’s deadline.
The Colorado Roadless Rule would determine how about more than 4 million acres of undeveloped, road-free land in Colorado’s national forests will be managed.
The proposed rule keeps new roads out of roadless areas, but there are exceptions, according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
Under the latest plan, a road can be built within a half mile of the edge of a roadless area inside a community protection zone, where logging trees will protect homes and businesses from wildfire, especially in areas that have a large number of trees that have died because of the bark beetle.
