LEADVILLE, Colo.—Wildlife officers have killed a black bear that went into a tent in a central-Colorado campground and bit the leg of a sleeping teenage boy.
State wildlife officials say the boy was camping out with his family in the mountains near Leadville when the bear attacked him early Friday. Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton says the boy was treated for deep wounds in his leg and released from the hospital.
Hampton says the boy fought off the bear and other campers scared it away.
State and federal wildlife officers using dogs tracked the bear and killed it Friday evening. Hampton says black bears aren’t typically aggressive.
Officials say the boy was participating in the Colorado Bow Hunters Association’s annual jamboree.
