West Metro Fire Rescue extinguished a house fire in Lakewood that sent one woman to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation Monday night.

Micki Trost, a spokeswoman for the department, said crews received a call a little before 7 p.m. for a cooking-related fire in the 700 block of Carr Street. Firefighters extinguished the last of the fire about 7:30 p.m.

Trost did not have damage estimates but said the fire displaced the family for the night. The Red Cross planned to assist them, Trost said.

The woman with smoke inhalation was the only person injured in the fire.

Trost said cooking fires are the leading cause of fires in homes throughout the United States. She reminded people not to leave food unattended while they cook.

She said she did not know if the family in Lakewood had been watching over the food while it cooked. Investigators were still on scene about 9:55 p.m.
