Boulder council agrees to ballot measure protesting unlimited corporate spending in politics

The Boulder City Council early Wednesday agreed that the city attorney should draft a potential ballot referendum that would call for an end to unlimited corporate spending in politics.

The referendum would ask voters to protest the Citizens United decision last year by the U.S. Supreme Court. That case removed limits on corporate and union spending on issue ads.

The 5-4 Supreme Court decision was based on the presumption that corporations are people with the same First Amendment rights as individuals, and that money is a form of speech.

The national group called Move to Amend is trying to pass a constitutional amendment saying that corporations are not people and money is not speech.
