Following a year of intense debate, the city’s “energy future” finally landed squarely in the hands of the nine elected leaders Tuesday night.

The City Council took on the first reading of ballot language for the Nov. 1 election that would ask voters to approve ending the city’s longtime relationship with Xcel Energy in favor of forming a municipal utility.

In a unanimous vote at 11:58 p.m., the council moved the measure on to a second reading Aug. 2.

“We’ve come a long ways, we’ve spent a lot of money and I think our voters want to have a choice on this,” said councilman Ken Wilson.
