The Boulder City Council met late into the night Tuesday, debating whether to ask voters to approve the creation of a municipal electric utility.

After dealing with other issues, the council heard public comment on the issue and was not expected to take a final vote until near midnight.

The city staff is recommending a measure for the November ballot that would continue development of a municipal utility and end a century of buying power from Xcel Energy and its predecessors.

Boulder’s estimate on the price tag of the new utility: $6 million in upfront costs, $121.3 million to buy Xcel’s lines and $60 million to start it up.
