Jerry Butler, a former Pro Bowl receiver with the Buffalo Bills, is the Broncos’ director of player development.
He will assist Broncos players with their lives away from the field.
Butler, 53, is highly regarded around the league because he is considered a pioneer of many of the NFL’s player development programs, including those that address college degree completion, internships, counseling and financial education.
Among the recently developed programs he helped initiate are the NFL business entrepreneur program and broadcast camp.
Before starting with the Broncos this week, Butler served in the same role with the Cleveland Browns the past 10 years.
He was a Bills receiver from 1979-86, earning AFC rookie of the year in 1979 when he had 48 catches for 834 yards and four touchdowns (all four scores came in one game against the New York Jets). He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1980 when he had 57 catches, 832 yards and six touchdowns.
In 1981 and 1982, Butler was honored as the Bills’ man of the year for his community service.
