MANASSA, Colo.—Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is being honored during his hometown’s celebration of its heritage.

The Rocky Mountain Farmers Union and Sustainability Alliance of Southwest Colorado are thanking Salazar Saturday during the Pioneer Day parade in Manassa. The groups say as Interior secretary, Salazar has tried to balance clean energy development in the San Luis (san-LOO’-ees) Valley with protection of land and water.

The Interior Department has identified an area just south of Manassa in southwest Colorado as a solar energy zone, based on its potential for transmission and minimal impact to agriculture and water.

Salazar has also said he’ll take another look at a draft plan for siting solar projects on public lands in the West.
