SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has begun rubber-stamp local elections seen as another step toward strengthening leader Kim Jong-Il’s hereditary power hand-off to his third son. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said today that local assembly elections began across the country as songs reverberated and flags fluttered over polling stations crowded by voters.
The elections last happened four years ago. They’re taking place as the North tries to bolster the political position of Kim Jong-Il’s youngest son, Kim Jong-Un, as successor.
Kim Jong-Un was unveiled as a four-star general ahead of a major ruling party convention in September. He is believed to be in his late 20s.
