DENVER—Civil right activists are demanding an apology and an investigation into the death of a man who died after an altercation with security guards and police at the Denver Zoo.

KUSA-TV reports that activists and relatives of 29-year-old Alonzo Ashley presented their demands Friday during a protest at the zoo.

Authorities say Ashley was irrational and became violent after he was approached by security at the zoo Monday. Security was contacted about a man who appeared to be passed out.

Authorities say Alonzo fought with officers and security guards, who were injured. They say he convulsed and stopped breathing after police arrested him.

Zoo officials apologized Friday to the man’s family, but protesters want an investigation into the zoo’s security and the officers involved placed on leave.
