DENVER—The civilian official who oversees Denver’s police, fire and sheriff’s departments has resigned after a brief and stormy tenure that included the firing of eight police officers for disciplinary infractions.
Manager of Safety Charles Garcia resigned Wednesday. He had been in the job since March.
Garcia had said he would step down once Denver chose a new mayor to replace John Hickenlooper, who was elected governor last fall. City Council member Michael Hancock won the mayor’s race in a runoff in June.
The Denver Post reports Garcia wasn’t available for comment Wednesday.
A group of retired officers publicly questioned Garcia’s management this month. They said officers were reluctant to confront people who appeared to be breaking the law.
Deputy Manager of Safety Ashley Kilroy was sworn in as interim manager.
