Broomfield-based Ball Corp. said Thursday that its second-quarter net income more than doubled, helped by demand for metal packaging in China and Europe, expansion into extruded aluminum packaging and strong performance in its aerospace unit.

Earnings surged to $143.1 million, or 84 cents per share, for the three months ended July 3. That is up significantly from earnings of $69 million, or 37 cents per share, during the same period a year ago. Revenue climbed 15 percent to $2.31 billion.

Adjusted earnings were 85 cents per share, just shy of analysts’ predictions.
