The Colorado Golf Association team was poised to record its best finish ever at the 39th annual boys Junior America’s Cup, sitting in fourth place heading into today’s final round at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen.
“We knew this would be the year to have our best finish and maybe make a run at the title,” said Cameron Harrell of Colorado Springs, who shared seventh place in the individual standings.
The CGA began playing in the Cup in 1975. Its best finish is fourth (1985). Colorado tied Northern California for round of the day (7-over-par 217). Northern California held a six-stroke advantage over second-place Oregon. Colorado was nine out of the lead.
Jonah Texeira, a 15-year-old on the San Diego team, led the medalist chase at 1-under 139. Harrell, who will play for Colorado State, was at 144, and Cole Nygren of Longmont was tied for 10th at 145.
• The CWGA team finished eighth of 18 teams at the girls Junior America’s Cup in Genoa, Nev. Allie Johnston of Castle Rock finished 16th.
• Mark Hubbard of Denver was in 26th place at the Pacific Coast Amateur in Truckee, Calif., after a 2-over 74 in the third round. The former San Jose State golfer stands at 5-over-par 221, 13 strokes behind the leader, Taylor Travis of Fremont, Calif. Matt Schovee of Cherry Hills Village was in 35th place, and Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs was 54th.
Utah will be seeing argyle.
The Garmin-Cervelo cycling team will prepare for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado by sending a squad to the Tour of Utah, a 409-mile, six-day jaunt that begins Aug. 9.
The Boulder-based team will send Tom Danielson, who finished ninth overall at the Tour de France, as well as David Zabriskie and Christian Vande Velde. Other notable riders will be George Hincapie of BMC; Team RadioShack’s Levi Leipheimer, the defending Tour of Utah champ and current Tour de Suisse winner; and Tejay Van Garderen of HTC-Highroad.
Springs woman takes wrestling worlds silver.
Adeline Gray, 20, of Colorado Springs, took home the silver medal at the wrestling Junior World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Gray, a freestyle 147 1/2-pounder, defeated Alina Makhynia of Ukraine in the semifinals, 5-4, 4-0, and lost to Sara Dosho of Japan in the final, 0-6, 1-0, 3-5.
“There were a couple of positions that she got the better of me in,” Gray said. “This is my first time wrestling this Japanese girl. I knew I was weak in some of those areas, and she highlighted them.”
