Starting in September, the Consumer Affairs Division of the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office will be headed by an attorney.

District Attorney Stan Garnett said the increasing volume and sophistication of white collar crime in Boulder County — including mortgage and securities fraud — make it important to have an attorney at the head of the division, identifying cases that involve criminal activity or might merit a civil lawsuit.

The new director will be Jane Walsh, a deputy district attorney who currently handles felonies in county court.

The division will be renamed the Community Protection Division and its mission expanded to include elder abuse, much of which is financial in nature.

Garnett said it’s important to him to use the authority he has under Colorado law to pursue consumer protection issues as strongly as possible.
