A Brighton firefighter facing more than a dozen charges, including sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, waived his preliminary hearing Friday in Adams County District Court.

Randy Cleveland, 35, is scheduled for arraignment Sept. 8 while “ongoing talks” continue between Cleveland’s lawyer and prosecutors, a Boulder district attorney spokeswoman said Friday.

Cleveland is accused of abusing his wife for several years while Brighton police allegedly ignored her complaints because Cleveland was a firefighter and a former deputy sheriff, according to court documents. Brighton police have said allegations against Cleveland were investigated thoroughly and that the department’s detectives ultimately recommended felony charges be filed.
