Voters will be asked to continue the sales tax that supports the Larimer County jail, but at a lower rate than shoppers currently are paying.
The Larimer County commissioners on Thursday directed the county staff to prepare a question for the November ballot asking to repeal two current, but soon ending, sales taxes that equal 0.40 percent and replace them with one 0.375 percent sales tax that would last another 15 years.
The elected board chose the lower sales tax rate and, therefore, less money saved upon expiration in 2026 over a request for 0.40 percent.
“The people I talk to, they’re feeling intense economic pressure in their homes,” said Tom Donnelly, commissioner from Loveland. “People I talk to want us to do this at the level that’s the least economic pain in their homes. For me, that’s the least sales tax.”
