Someday, there will be buses at a First and Main station. Even trains, eventually.

But first, there have to be plans.

For the next 10 months, that’s the situation for Longmont. The city is beginning a $240,000 study meant to lay out the timetable for the new station, how best to work with neighboring properties and what can be done to encourage development in the area.

Part of the challenge, though, is that the Regional Transportation District itself doesn’t know the full timetable yet. Oh, the “bus hub” isn’t likely to stray far from the 2015 date originally announced. But depending on whether the RTD board goes for and gets a sales tax increase, the train station could arrive anywhere between 2019 and 2042.

That means the city’s plan has to be a flexible one.
