“Rio”
*** (out of 4)
Domesticated Blu, a cerulean macaw, and free-spirited bird Jewel must travel to Rio to mate. So much in this movie is so appealing, for so long, that you can almost forgive the fact that there’s not much story here. It’s essentially one long chase, with the usual romantic-comedy friction that will, of course, turn into love. Nothing deep or heavy here — just a good time and a pleasurable escape. G. 1 hour 36 minutes.Christy Lemire, The Associated Press
“Soul Surfer”
** 1/2 (out of 4)
In this Christian-leavened family film, local light AnnaSophia Robb portrays pro surfer Bethany Hamilton, who in 2003 lost her arm in a shark attack and lived to write about it and compete again. Robb does an able job as Hamilton — Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt are even better as her parents — but the script and Sean McNamara’s direction don’t trust the story of faith and family enough to let it unfold without preaching. PG. 1 hour 46 minutes.Lisa Kennedy, The Denver Post
