AURORA, Colo.—Aurora police are searching for a man accused of demanding money from a business, firing a gun at an employee and then fleeing, but not before leaving behind a backpack with a device that authorities say had all the makings of a bomb.

There were no reports of injuries.

Police say a dark-skinned man about 6 feet tall, 165 pounds and appearing to be in his early 20s entered an Ace Cash Express Tuesday afternoon, placed the backpack on the counter and demanded money. Police say that when the employee ducked below the counter, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired two rounds in the direction of the employee. The suspect then ran away.

Authorities evacuated nearby businesses until the Adams County bomb squad could safely detonate the device.
